For years, the LGBTQ+ community has sought solace within the intimate confines of gay bars and clubs — the interiors of which are often shrouded in dimness. Despite their ostensible purpose of inclusivity and warmth, these spaces can exude an air of scrutiny and detachment. Although intended as sanctuaries for queer individuals, they can occasionally harbor perilous substances and foster a culture of casual encounters. My work encapsulates a profound duality, manifesting through the interplay of darkness and illumination, both figuratively and literally. These paintings serve as a conduit for the contrasting emotions experienced within the gay nightlife scene of Dallas: the coexistence of liberation and judgment, security and vulnerability, self-assuredness and solitude.
